The European Cup started without teams from England in 1955 with Real Madrid winning the first five titles. Scotland had a more enlightened attitude but it was not until 1967 that Celtic won the competition.

Manchester United followed the next year while from 1977 to 1982, Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa dominated the competition. But then came Heysel and the deaths of 39 Juventus fans caused by a section of Liverpool fans and the ban for English clubs.

In 1992/93 UEFA decided to change the format of the competition bringing in groups and restricting the knockout stages until the end. They called it the UEFA Champions League, but it quickly became known as the European Champions League.

Andrew Godsell’s truly encyclopaedic book on the European Cup and its successor the European Champions League chronicles all this and more. He profiles the major characters of the competition and gives every result.

“Superb Book... entire history of the event captured by Andrew Godsell with both his words and the many photographs bringing the memories flooding back.”
Hampshire Chronicle

“A statistician’s dream... a more than useful reference book for nostalgia buffs.”
Southampton Echo
